December 16, 2019As Veterans Day nears, we’re reminded of the impact that Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has on so many of our military members – both active, and veterans. PTSD is a mental health condition that can develop in response to a highly traumatic event - typically surrounding abuse, threat of death, physical or sexual violence, or military combat.
Many who struggle with PTSD do not always find relief through traditional medication, and are left suffering unnecessarily. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the number of Veterans with PTSD varies depending on when they served:
- Operations Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Enduring Freedom (OEF): 11-20% who served in OIF or OEF have PTSD in a given year.
- Gulf War (Desert Storm): About 12% have PTSD in a given year.
- Vietnam War: It is estimated that about 30% of Vietnam Veterans have had PTSD in their lifetime.
On top of PTSD, many suffer with co-occurring mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, anger, substance misuse, and suicidality. Although all of this can be devastating and overwhelming, there is a groundbreaking technology that has been, and continues to be, used for those suffering with little relief from traditional medication treatments.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) has been FDA-cleared for Depression since 2008 and has since been used to help treat a myriad of other mental health conditions. TMS has been met with great results for treating PTSD and continues to be studied in clinical trials.
