Each of us is a unique human being with a vast array of individual experiences which have shaped our innate self to create the person that we are today. The hope is that each person can always function well in their personal and work lives while experiencing some degree of joy in these areas. In reality, life invariably presents us with challenges that may cause pain and difficulty (in these areas of life). As a result, when people who may have a genetic predisposition experience such stressors, they can develop symptoms consistent with any number of psychiatric conditions. This is where I can help.
My approach is one based on a wellness model. While it is necessary to target the symptoms that lead someone to treatment, I think it is a disservice to focus solely on a person’s symptoms and illness. In reality, people are much more than the symptoms that they may be experiencing. Each person is a human being with strengths, talents, interests, a vast array of experiences, and a support network of others involved in their life. I feel the most effective way to help a person begin to heal is by focusing on their strengths and assisting them to harness their available resources, while treating the symptoms that led them to seek treatment.
As a result, after a thorough assessment, I help my patients through formulating a plan to begin to target the symptoms that led them to seek treatment. At the same time, I begin to address all areas of a person’s life. I inquire about their personal relationships, work life and career, personal health (to include diet, exercise, medical health), personal development, and spiritual life. After doing so, I help them to develop a plan to identify specific goals in each of these areas. By doing so, I believe they can begin to improve the overall quality of their life.
